We would like to extend a special thank you to the Missoulian and Kim Briggeman for the wonderful article in today’s paper highlighting the “Upstanders” docuseries event, Soft Landing, and Mary Poole! Check out the article and be sure to come out to The Wilma on Monday, 10/23!
Only 5 Days until “Upstanders” Free Screening at The Wilma!
Soft Landing and the Missoula community have been given a chance to shine a light nationally by being selected to participate in the Starbucks docuseries “Upstanders”. It is hard to belive the official screening at the Wilma is only 5 days away! I am eager and thankful to see how this will help us to continue to engage in the national conversation about the beauty of communities coming together to welcome refugees.
It is exciting that Missoula was chosen as one of only 4 cities nationwide to put on a full screening of all 11 short films with the filmmaker present to introduce and talk about the films! Here is a little trailer for you.
Please join us for this free event on Monday at 7p (doors open at 6) at the Wilma to celebrate this incredible and welcoming community we live in! Free coffee (hopefully they have a decaf option this late! Ha!) and popcorn will be available as well as the Wilma’s regular cash bar.
Mary Poole Featured in Starbucks “Upstanders” Docuseries
Several months ago, Soft Landing Missoula’s Mary Poole was selected to be featured in Starbucks docuseries called “Upstanders”. This unique collection of short films focuses on ordinary people doing extraordinary things to create positive change in our communities. Mary is one of 11 Upstanders chosen from throughout the entire country. For those of you who have met Mary, you know that her huge heart, open mindedness, and passion for creating a welcoming home for refugees made her stand out among others as a community agent for positive change.
We are so honored to share this film and celebrate Soft Landing’s work with the Missoula community. Join Soft Landing, the IRC, and representatives from Starbucks at The Wilma on Monday, October 23 from 7:00- 8:30 pm (doors open at 6p) for a free screening of the “Upstanders” series. Each film is about 5 minutes long. There will be free Starbucks coffee and popcorn, and a cash bar will also be available. Help us fill The Wilma for this amazing celebration!
To RSVP, email Jamie.Weinstein@starbucks.com. Include your name, your guest(s)’s name, and include “Missoula” in the email line. Check out our Facebook event, too!
We hope to see you there!
A Timeline of The Missoulian’s Refugee Coverage
The Missoulian has been covering refugee resettlement in Montana from the beginning. Check out the timeline of their coverage since February 2016.
Celebrating One Year of Resettlement
One year ago, the first refugee families arrived in Missoula from Democratic Republic of Congo. Since then, Missoula has embraced families from Iraq, Syria, and Eritrea as members of our community. Soft Landing is so grateful to have been part of this process from the beginning, thanks to our partnership with the International Rescue Committee. We can’t wait to see what the next year holds for SLM, Missoula and our refugee community!
