Big Sky Documentary Film Fest 2018

Screen Shot 2018-01-29 at 10.04.43 PM.png

Every year since our birth (ok, that is just 2 years!) we have been lucky to be sponsors for beautiful, heart-wrenching, uplifting, and important films during the Big Sky Documentary Film Fest. Soft Landing Missoula was catalyzed from photos and film and we firmly believe in their power to show truth and create positive change in the world.

This year- year three- we are honored and in so much awe of the selection that we have the privilege of sponsoring.  These films are very near and dear to our hearts. From the moment the “New Neighbors Project” came to us with a proposal to teach interested new arrivals in Missoula how to document their own experience, to flip the lens that had been placed on them, through all of the hard work that it takes to make a full feature film and multiple shorts a reality, we knew this was going to be incredible.  We are so proud of the refugee film makers that created these films and endlessly grateful that they have chosen to share these powerful stories with us.  Getting into the BSDFF was never a “given” for this project, but speaks to the amazing craftsmanship, talent, and guts of the filmmakers and the New Neighbors crew.

Please check out the New Neighbors Website for the trailer for the full length film, filmmaker bios, and info on how to get tickets.

Schedule (click to read more about each film from the BSDFF website):

Tuesday Feb 20th, 6p, MCT

Renga for the West (New Neighbors full feature)

Never Give Up While You Are Still Alive (Short by Joel Kambale)

Sunday Feb 25th, 8:15p, MCT

This is Congo (not part of the New Neighbors project but looks incredible and we are still proud to sponsor it!)

Kuwezesha Wanawake (Short by Justine Binwa)

Please join us for these transformative films and share the privilege of getting to hold these stories in your heart forever.

“We Are All America” National Week of Action

Screen Shot 2018-01-24 at 10.07.32 AM.png

Soft Landing Missoula and Welcoming America encourage you to participate in We Are All America’s National Week of Action, January 29 – February 3. This week is intended to lift up and defend our long-standing values of welcoming individuals who seek protection from violence and persecution.

The national week of action will kick off on the one year anniversary that the Trump Administration released executive orders banning individuals from seven (then six) Muslim-majority countries from entering the country and thousands of Americans took to the streets and flooded airports in solidarity with refugees.

January 27th is a critical date, as people and policy makers across the country remember the actions they took that day and can recommit to solidarity with Muslims, refugees, and all targeted communities.

Join with Us and Ask Congress and the Administration: #WhereRTheRefugees?

Where are the refugees? The Trump Administration set a historically low refugee admissions ceiling of 45,000 this year, down from 110,000 the previous year, yet the US is not letting in nearly that number. At the current rate, the US would only settle 15,000 refugees this year. That’s a near 87% reduction in the program. Families are being separated by the bans and refugees are at dire risk. The United States is failing in our traditional role as a refugee protection leader. Join us in asking the President and Congress #WhereRTheRefugees and demand the Trump Administration #LetThemIn!

If you are interested in contacting your government representatives, We Are All America provided suggested messaging below. The contact information for Montana representatives can be found below, as well.

Thank you for taking action to support the future of refugees!

January SLM Monthly Supper Club features Syrian cuisine!

Screen Shot 2018-01-04 at 9.48.55 PM.png

We are so excited to bring you the fresh yet ancient flavors of Syria as presented by Guest Chef Ghalia Ahmad Fayz AlMasri.

In a country well known for its hospitality and generosity, many traditional Syrian dishes date back to at least the 13th century.  Large shared platters of food often include spiced varieties of meats such as lamb, nuts, rice, and flavorful combinations of vegetables. Scents of fresh herbs and garlic are common, and much care goes into presenting a dish that is as beautiful as it is delicious. Spending time with family and friends while gathering to share love through food is central to Syrian culture and cuisine, as well as ending the meal on tastes of sweetness.

Come enjoy this incredible family style meal with us!

what is this new “soft landing supper club”?

Through Soft Landing Supper Club, we hope to share the incredible culinary talent of some of Missoula’s newest neighbors, who bring rich traditions and flavor to our community, and offer it in love.

Every Monthly Supper Club will feature a different region of the world, highlighting a chef from the refugee community, in collaboration with local restaurants of Missoula. Proceeds from Supper Club will directly support the guest chef and Soft Landing Missoula.

We are grateful to the refugees of our community for their willingness to share their culture with us. A very special thank you to Burns St. Bistro for offering their kitchen, creative collaboration and guidance in hosting our first Monthly Supper Club.

In a world often divided, we believe it is United We Eat!

#GivingTuesday is November 28!

Screen Shot 2017-11-16 at 10.38.49 AM.png

This year, Soft Landing Missoula will participate in the national day of giving, #GivingTuesday.

2017 was marked by increased programming for refugee families, as well as numerous events to bring refugees and Missoulians together. These events were some of the first opportunities for Missoulians to see, hear, taste, and celebrate the new cultures that refugees have brought to our city. We have a lot more of this planned for 2018. Please help us make it happen!

On November 28, we encourage you to make a gift to Soft Landing Missoula to help us reach our goal of $10,000! Your support will impact our programming, events in the community, and resources here in the office. Check in throughout the day to take advantage of one of the incredible matches organizations and individuals have offered for this campaign. We are so grateful for you!

To make a gift online, go to www.softlandingmissoula.org/donate. Or, text “GIVE2SLM” to Text “GIVE2SLM” to 1-844-544-7171. You can also drop off a check at our office, 939 Stephens Ave Suite C, any time between 8 am – 4 pm on Tuesday, Nov. 28!

Mark your calendar for November 28 to support SLM on #GivingTuesday!

Only 5 Days until “Upstanders” Free Screening at The Wilma!

Soft Landing and the Missoula community have been given a chance to shine a light nationally by being selected to participate in the Starbucks docuseries “Upstanders”. It is hard to belive the official screening at the Wilma is only 5 days away! I am eager and thankful to see how this will help us to continue to engage in the national conversation about the beauty of communities coming together to welcome refugees.

It is exciting that Missoula was chosen as one of only 4 cities nationwide to put on a full screening of all 11 short films with the filmmaker present to introduce and talk about the films! Here is a little trailer for you.

Please join us for this free event on Monday at 7p (doors open at 6) at the Wilma to celebrate this incredible and welcoming community we live in!  Free coffee (hopefully they have a decaf option this late! Ha!) and popcorn will be available as well as the Wilma’s regular cash bar.

Several months ago, Soft Landing Missoula’s Mary Poole was selected to be featured in Starbucks docuseries called “Upstanders”. This unique collection of short films focuses on ordinary people doing extraordinary things to create positive change in our communities. Mary is one of 11 Upstanders chosen from throughout the entire country. For those of you who have met Mary, you know that her huge heart, open mindedness, and passion for creating a welcoming home for refugees made her stand out among others as a community agent for positive change.

We are so honored to share this film and celebrate Soft Landing’s work with the Missoula community. Join Soft Landing, the IRC, and representatives from Starbucks at The Wilma on Monday, October 23 from 7:00- 8:30 pm (doors open at 6p) for a free screening of the “Upstanders” series. Each film is about 5 minutes long. There will be free Starbucks coffee and popcorn, and a cash bar will also be available. Help us fill The Wilma for this amazing celebration!

To RSVP, email Jamie.Weinstein@starbucks.com. Include your name, your guest(s)’s name, and include “Missoula” in the email line. Check out our Facebook event, too!

We hope to see you there!
