Look, Don’t Look, Look..

That is what I feel like when trying to keep up with the world these days. I usually try my best to keep these newsletters positive, but sometimes the heartbreak is so raw, so deep, that we must pay attention.  The world needs us to pay attention, to look. Congo, Myanmar, Ghouta….others… how do we look there and not see the faces of our own children?  How do we not despair? How do we not feel helpless? So, I don’t have a lighthearted message for you today. With all of they joy surrounding the SLM world in Missoula these days, all of the amazing humans that have enriched our lives and our town, all of the hard work of so many partners, all of the support of such a welcoming community, all of the new and delicious celebrations, we still can’t forget to look… to educate ourselves, to pay attention, and to act when we can.

In love and gratitude,

Mary Poole

Iraqi Cuisine at SLM’s March Supper Club!

Screen Shot 2018-03-01 at 11.19.55 PM.png

Join us at Masala on March 11th for another wonderful night full of culture and delicious food!

The Soft Landing Missoula Supper Club aims to introduce the incredible culinary talent of Missoula’s newest neighbors and international residents, whose rich and flavorful cooking traditions provide a cultural bridge and enrich our shared community.

This month’s supper club will feature Iraqi food made by the incredibly talented Guest Chef Wasan!

Iraqi cuisine often combines Ancient traditions with modern influence from neighboring regions. Savory slow cooked meats with nuts, vegetables, and rice, are paired with outstanding sweet and decadent desserts. Herbs and spices set Iraqi food apart with flavors including cinnamon, mint, and dried lemon. Wasan’s menu comes from the Babil region of Iraq and embodies the ancient recipes of Babylon. Delve into this delicious food and deep into Iraqi culture.

After the success of the Eat, Give, Love model at last months supper club, we have decided to do it again. Payment will be collected after the meal, but when you pay you will have the option to: Eat: $40 for a delicious family style Afghan dinner, where a portion of the cost covers ingredients and staff time, and the rest goes to the guest chef. Give: $60 gets you the same delicious dinner, but with an additional $20 going directly to the guest chef. Love: $80 gives an additional $40 directly to the guest chef to collectively make this an unforgettable evening! All levels are welcome and appreciated!

Not slowing down…

Why we all thought that things would be a bit quieter after the Holidays is a mystery to me 😉  February has become an extension of an unexpectedly busy January! Soft Landing has been bringing on new board members and welcoming new staff (WE LOVE our new Vista!!!  Please Megan, never leave us!!!). We have spent a fair amount of time focusing inward to increase the resiliency of our organization and continue to explore the constant evaluation of “doing right” by this huge opportunity we have been given to welcome refugees to Missoula.  Of course (and thankfully) the work is never done and our adventures in helping to create an inclusive community are only growing.  We LOVE to see how eager Missoulians are to new experiences and to celebrating all of the beauty that refugee families have brought to this little western city. Keep celebrating, keep loving, keep finding joy.  We will be there right along with you.

In love and gratitude,

Mary Poole

Lifelong Learning Center offers another English Tutor Training

Teaching English Language Learners-Volunteer Training

Teaching English to second language learners involves a great deal more than opening a book and learning words, phrases and grammar.  Learn the characteristics of an English Language Learner, explore teaching approaches and gain practical ideas and practice to build your repertoire. This is a great way to prepare for volunteering to be an in-home English Tutor with Soft Landing Missoula.  Classes are held on Mondays and Wednesday, 6-9pm, March 5-14, 2018.
